Frequently Asked Questions

Can Harf Hike be downloaded from the App Store?
Not yet. Harf Hike is in the beta test phase and can be tested using Apple's TestFlight App (see homepage)

Will Harf Hike be a free App?
The basic functionality will be free but the full functionality will require a yearly subscription. Harf Hike makes use of several paid services, for example to calculate routes and to show advanced maps with hiking & cycling trails and 'knooppunten'.
  • Free functionality: Apple maps, view route + current location + track so far, alert when deviating from route, event mode, store trips in Apple Health, view all trips in Apple Health, import route gpx.
  • Subscription-only functionality: Mapbox outdoor maps, automatic directions, 'knooppunten' (NL), search locations, save routes to iCloud, Apple Watch extension, off-line maps (when implemented).
During the beta test phase all functionality is free.

Is an English version of Harf Hike planned?
Yes. The current beta test version of Harf Hike is in Dutch but an English version is under development.

Can Harf Hike be used on a Mac?
Harf Hike can be used on a Mac with Apple Silicon. At this moment it is not optimized for Mac but this is planned for the future.

Can I share routes and trips between my iPhone and my iPad?
Yes, routes can be saved in iCloud and opened on your other Apple devices.
Completed trips can be stored in Apple Health which is synchronized on your Apple devices.

Can Harf Hike be used off-line?
Not yet. At this moment Harf Hike cannot download maps. When you use Harf Hike off-line (so without an active data connection), it works but you will probably see an empty map with only the route, your location and the track so far.
This is high on the wishlist and will be implemented as soon as possible.

What are the minimum requirements?
IOS 16+ (partial functionality available from IOS 15.5)
WatchOS 10+

Can I organize my routes?
Not yet. It is on the wishlist to add a menu where you can view and organize your routes. At this moment routes can be selected by an iCloud file browser.

Will more events be added to the Event Mode?
Yes, this is the plan. How exactly this will look like and whether it will be possible to share your location with friends is still under investigation.

How do you share your location with your friends? Can I use it as well?
This is an experimental feature which is disabled by default. A user can enable it by adding a configuration file with the technical settings in iCloud. This requires some technical expertise. Contact me if you want to try it out.

Will Harf Hike contain ads?
No, Harf Hike will be ad-free.

Does Harf Hike gather personal data?
No, unlike many other Apps, Harf Hike does not gather personal data. The only data that is shared beyond your own device and account is the data that is required for the services you use. For example, two locations for calculating directions.

Is there an Android version of Harf Hike?
Not at the moment. As of now, there are no plans to create an Android version.
